Huế, the old imperial capital in central Vietnam, is about 650 km south of Hanoi by road. It's often the first stop for travellers heading down the country, and it's worth it: a huge walled citadel, royal tombs along the Perfume River, and some of the spiciest, most interesting food in Vietnam. Getting there is the first decision.

Flying: fastest

Flights from Nội Bài to Phú Bài airport take about 1 hour 15 minutes, and several airlines fly the route daily. The airport is around 15 km from the city centre, roughly 25 minutes by car.

  • Best for: short trips, travellers who want to save a day.
  • Watch out for: fares rise sharply around Tết and holidays; check baggage rules on budget fares.

Overnight train: the classic

The Reunification line runs the length of the country, and the Hanoi to Huế leg takes roughly 12–14 hours. Leave in the evening, sleep in a berth, and wake up passing rice fields in central Vietnam.

  • Soft sleeper (4-berth cabin): the most comfortable choice for most people.
  • Hard sleeper (6-berth): cheaper, more cramped.
  • Seats: fine for short legs, tiring overnight.

Bring snacks, water and something warm; air conditioning can be cold. Book ahead in peak seasons. Some private companies run nicer carriages attached to the same trains.

  • Best for: people who enjoy train travel and want to save a night of hotel.
  • Watch out for: delays happen, and sleeping isn't easy for everyone.

Sleeper bus: cheapest, least comfortable

Overnight sleeper buses take around 13–15 hours with stops. Seats recline almost flat, but the berths are short, and the road can be bumpy. Newer "cabin" style buses are more comfortable than older ones.

  • Best for: tight budgets.
  • Watch out for: tall people will be cramped; choose a reputable company with recent good reviews.

When to go to Huế

Huế has its own weather. The rainy season runs roughly from September to December, with the heaviest rain and occasional floods in October and November. Spring (February to April) is mild and pleasant. Summer (May to August) is hot, often above 35°C.

How long to stay

Two full days lets you see the citadel, a couple of royal tombs and a boat trip on the Perfume River, and eat your way through bún bò Huế, bánh bèo and the other local dishes. Many people continue south to Hội An over the Hải Vân Pass, one of Vietnam's most scenic roads.

Which one should you pick?

  • Short on time: fly.
  • Want an experience: overnight train, soft sleeper.
  • Saving every dong: sleeper bus.
