December is when Hanoi finally feels like winter. Not snow-and-mittens winter, but grey skies, cold mornings and people on motorbikes wrapped up to the eyes in jackets, scarves and gloves. If you come from a place with central heating, the surprise is not how cold it gets outside. It is how cold it stays inside.

How cold is it, really?

A normal December day sits roughly between 14°C and 21°C. On sunny afternoons it can feel mild. Then a cold front arrives from the north and the city drops to 9–12°C for a few days, with a damp wind that gets through thin clothes.

Rain is light this month. The sky is often flat and white rather than wet. The real issue is humidity in older houses: tiled floors, single-glazed windows, no insulation. Many guesthouses have an air conditioner that also heats; ask before you book, and check that it actually blows warm air.

What people wear

Look at what locals wear and copy it. That usually means a puffer or padded jacket, a scarf, closed shoes and, on a bike, gloves. Shops on Hàng Đào and in the malls sell decent jackets from about 300,000 VND if you packed too light. Layers work better than one heavy coat because cafés and buses can be warm.

Christmas in a city that doesn't stop for it

Christmas Day is a normal working day in Vietnam. Banks and offices are open. But the city still dresses up for it, especially around three places:

  • Hàng Mã street, which sells paper goods all year, turns into a wall of tinsel, Santa costumes and fake trees from late November. It is crowded, loud and fun for twenty minutes.
  • St. Joseph's Cathedral (Nhà thờ Lớn) holds evening services on Christmas Eve, and the square in front fills with families and young couples taking photos. Arrive early or watch from a café nearby; the crowd can get very tight.
  • Shopping malls and hotels put up big trees and lights. They are the easiest places to feel Christmassy with heating.

New Year's Eve by the lake

January 1 is a public holiday, and on December 31 thousands of people gather around Hoàn Kiếm Lake to count down. Traffic around the lake is closed in the evening on weekends anyway, and on New Year's Eve the area is packed. Watch your phone and wallet, agree on a meeting point in case you lose your group, and expect ride-hailing apps to be slow and expensive right after midnight. Walking 15 minutes away from the lake before booking a car helps.

Small things that are nicer in December

  • The last of the white daisy (*cúc họa mi*) season usually overlaps with early December, so flower bikes are still around the lake for a week or two.
  • Street food moves toward warm and fried: hot pot, grilled skewers, sticky rice in the morning, and roasted sweet potatoes on street corners in the evening.
  • Walking all day is comfortable. July in Hanoi is 35°C and humid; December is perfect for long walks around the Old Quarter and the French Quarter.

Two honest downsides

First, air quality. Still, cool winter air traps pollution, and some December days are hazy from morning to night. Check an air quality app each morning and plan indoor things on the worst days.

Second, the light. Sunset is around 5:20 pm, and with grey skies the days feel short. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning and early afternoon.

Day trips in December

Ninh Bình is comfortable and quiet, though the rice fields are bare. Hạ Long Bay is often misty, which can look beautiful or look like a wall of white, depending on the day. Sapa gets genuinely cold in December, close to freezing on some nights, so go only with warm clothes.

Is December a good month to visit?

If you like cool weather, walking and festive lights, yes. If you want blue skies and swimming, head south instead; Ho Chi Minh City and Phú Quốc are in their dry, sunny season at the same time.
