Hạ Long Bay from Hanoi: Day Trip or Overnight Cruise? Distance, Time and Honest Tips
Planning Hạ Long Bay from Hanoi: how far it is, how long it takes, day trip vs overnight cruise, Lan Hạ Bay as a quieter option, seasons and weather, and how to choose a boat.

Hạ Long Bay is on almost everyone's list, and for good reason: thousands of limestone islands rising out of green water look unreal even after you've seen the photos. The question is not whether to go, but how, because the trip from Hanoi takes longer than people expect.
How far is it?
Hạ Long city is about 170 km east of Hanoi. On the expressway, the drive takes roughly 2.5–3 hours each way. Most cruises leave from the harbour at Tuần Châu or nearby piers.
Day trip: possible, but tiring
A day trip means around six hours on the road and four to five hours on the water. You'll see the main sights, usually a cave, a kayak stop and lunch on board, but it feels rushed, and the boats on day routes tend to be the most crowded.
Choose a day trip if you are short on time and accept a long day. Otherwise, stay at least one night.
Overnight cruise: the better experience
On a one-night cruise you board around midday, sail further out, kayak or swim in the afternoon, watch the sunset on deck, and wake up in the bay before the day boats arrive. That quiet morning is the best part.
Cruises range from basic boats to very comfortable ones. Price differences mostly reflect cabin size, food, route and how crowded the boat is. Read recent reviews and look at the route map, not just the photos of the cabins.
Hạ Long, Lan Hạ or Bái Tử Long?
- Hạ Long Bay is the classic and the busiest.
- Lan Hạ Bay, near Cát Bà island, has similar scenery with fewer boats. Many travellers prefer it now.
- Bái Tử Long Bay, to the northeast, is quieter still and feels more remote.
If crowds bother you, ask for routes in Lan Hạ or Bái Tử Long.
When to go
- March to May and September to November: generally the best balance of weather and visibility.
- June to August: hot and good for swimming, but tropical storms can cancel cruises at short notice. Check the cancellation policy.
- December to February: cool and often misty. Photos can look moody and beautiful or just grey. Swimming is cold.
How to choose a boat
- Look at recent reviews, from the last few months.
- Check the route. Boats that stay in the busiest part of the bay will feel crowded.
- Ask what's included: transfers from Hanoi, kayaking, cave entrance fees, drinks.
- Confirm the cancellation policy for bad weather.
Practical tips
- Bring motion sickness tablets if you get seasick, though the bay is usually calm.
- Drinks on board are expensive; some boats don't allow outside alcohol.
- Pack swimwear, sun cream, and a light jacket for the evening deck even in summer.
