Cost of Living in Hanoi in 2026: A Local's Real Monthly Budget

What a young office worker in Hanoi spends in a month in 2026: rent in Cầu Giấy or Thanh Xuân, lunch, petrol, weddings and money sent home, in VND and USD.

Ask ten people in Hanoi what it costs to live here and you will get ten answers, mostly depending on one thing: where you sleep. A room in a lane off Trần Duy Hưng and a serviced studio near West Lake are two different cities. What follows is the budget of a fairly typical young office worker who rents a room in a local house in Cầu Giấy or Thanh Xuân and rides a motorbike to work. I use about 26,000 VND to 1 USD; treat every number as a range, not a quote.

The month in one table (roughly)

  • Room in a shared house, 15–20 m², private bathroom: 2.5–3.5 million VND ($95–135)
  • Electricity and water: 300,000–600,000 VND; the summer air conditioner decides which end
  • Food, mostly lunch near the office plus some home cooking: 2.5–3.5 million VND
  • Petrol: 300,000–450,000 VND
  • Office parking: 100,000–200,000 VND
  • Phone plan with data: 100,000–150,000 VND
  • Coffee, milk tea, the odd beer: 300,000–600,000 VND

Add it up and the basics land around 6.5 to 9 million VND ($250–350). That is why so many people in their twenties share a house, and why "where do you live?" is one of the first questions colleagues ask each other.

Rent and the electricity question

Rooms in local houses in Cầu Giấy, Đống Đa or Thanh Xuân usually cost 2.5–4 million. A studio in a newer building with a lift, a kitchenette and a washing machine starts around 5–7 million. Further out, in Nam Từ Liêm or Hoàng Mai, the same money buys more space.

Electricity is where tenants get surprised. Vietnamese rules say landlords should not charge tenants more than the official retail electricity tariff, yet plenty of rooms are still advertised at a flat 3,500–4,000 VND per kWh. It is worth asking how electricity is calculated before signing and keeping the monthly receipts.

Food

Office lunch in central Hanoi now runs about 40,000–55,000 VND a meal, a little more if you order through an app. Cooking dinner a few nights a week is the single easiest saving; a 30,000 VND bag of greens and a few eggs from the morning market stretch surprisingly far.

Getting around

Most people ride. A 6–8 km commute burns 80,000–120,000 VND of petrol a week. Ride-hailing bikes cover short trips for 20,000–40,000 VND, and buses cost 8,000–20,000 VND depending on the route.

The costs that never show up in budget tables

  • Wedding season. In autumn the invitations stack up. Colleagues usually put 500,000 VND in the envelope, closer friends more. Three weddings in October can wipe out a month's savings.
  • Money for parents. Many young workers send 1–2 million VND home each month; it is simply part of the budget.
  • Office life. Birthday funds, farewell dinners, the team trip to Ba Vì.

So how much do you need?

For a local on 12–15 million VND, life is comfortable if you share a house and cook sometimes. On 8–10 million, it is a balancing act. If you earn in dollars or euros, Hanoi is very affordable as long as you live outside the tourist bubble around Hoàn Kiếm and eat where office workers eat.
